What's more American than hot dogs, right? Even though buns are the obvious choice for bread when cooking hot dogs, I thought it would be fun to try it as a grilled cheese sandwich. Maybe you ran out of buns (the numbers in those packages never match up, do they?) or maybe putting a hot dog on bread with a bunch of cheese is just enough of a change to keep you, or your kids, from getting bored. In any case, this hot dog grilled cheese sandwich recipe is a fun twist on a classic that I think you'll enjoy. Try it out for 4th of July, Memorial Day, Labor Day, or any BBQ party!

Choose your hot dog toppings

You really could go in a bunch of different directions here. Try not to overload your sandwich, but choose small amounts of whatever toppings you like on your hot dog.

I made mine with sauerkraut and chopped up sandwich pickles. You could also add ketchup or mustard or both. Have some hot dog relish in your fridge? Put a couple scoops of that on your hot dog grilled cheese sandwich. Or chop up some onions.

Maybe you enjoy some less traditional toppings on your hot dog. JalapeƱos, hot sauce, grilled veggies, bacon… The sky's the limit really.

Basically think of whatever toppings you generally like to put on a normal hot dog, and those will go great on your hot dog grilled cheese sandwich.

Just remember a little goes a long way. Too many things, and you're more likely to have things falling out of your sandwich!

As for the cheese, I used sliced cheddar cheese for my sandwich. Maybe you feel like American cheese is more appropriate for a grilled cheese sandwich made with hot dogs, and that would be fine too.

Or you can use shredded cheddar, but if you do, I highly recommend getting a block of cheddar and shredding it yourself. It melts – and tastes – much better that way.

How to make a hot dog grilled cheese sandwich

Start by cooking your hot dog. Either grill it in a pan or cook it in the microwave. You want it to be cooked before adding it to your sandwich.

Once the hot dog is done, cut it into thin penny-shaped pieces. The smaller pieces leave more room for the cheese to melt around them and hold everything together.

Place one slice of cheese on a piece of bread. Assemble any other ingredients you want on your hot dog grilled cheese sandwich, like sauerkraut, pickles, relish, ketchup, etc. Then add on your hot dog slices.

Optional: Even though I used sliced cheddar, I decided a little bit of shredded cheese would help hold things together. Especially if you're using a lot of ingredients, I recommend adding a pinch or two of shredded cheddar in the middle of your sandwich, after adding the other ingredients but before adding the hot dog.

Then add your second slice of cheese and close up the sandwich. Now you're ready to cook it.

Melt some butter in a pan on medium. Once the butter is completely melted, coats the pan, and is forming small bubbles, the pan is hot enough to start cooking.

Place your sandwich in the pan – carefully! It's too easy for things to fall out of this one. Let it cook for 3-4 minutes on one side, and then flip. Cook the other side for 3-4 minutes. If the first side isn't quite golden brown enough, flip again and cook each side for another minute or so.

I always think it's better to flip multiple times to make sure you're not burning your sandwich. And keep an eye on the butter in the pan, you might need to add a little bit more if it cooks off too quickly.

And if you cooked your hot dog in the same pan, be especially cautious about the timing. That pan will already be quite hot before you even start cooking your sandwich, so the bread will brown quicker. Lower the heat a notch, make sure you have plenty of butter, and flip often to avoid burning the bread.
